How paying the vet works with pet insurance
You pay your vet the full bill at the visit. Then you send the bill to Odie as a claim. If the claim is eligible, Odie reimburses you based on your reimbursement rate, deductible and annual limit.
A worked example
An eligible $1,240 bill, 80% reimbursement, $250 deductible left
- You pay the clinic at the visit
- $1,240
- Odie could reimburse you later
- $742
- Your final share
- $498
80% of $1,240 is $992. Odie then subtracts the $250 deductible, which leaves $742.
Illustration only, not a quote. It assumes the whole bill is eligible, your full deductible remains and your annual limit isn't reached. Not every bill is eligible. Actual reimbursement depends on your policy's terms.
Step by step
- Visit any licensed vet in the U.S. and pay the clinic.
- Send your vet bill to Odie as a claim through its member portal.
- Odie reviews the claim. If it's eligible, Odie reimburses you for the covered amount.
Plan for the full bill first
Reimbursement comes after you pay, so it helps to plan for the whole bill at the clinic. How long a claim takes depends on the claim. Odie's help center explains the process.
What can lower what comes back
- Costs that aren't eligible, like pre-existing conditions or care during waiting periods
- A deductible you haven't met yet this policy year
- An annual limit you've already used
